海角乱伦社区鈥檚 Annual Night at the Helm to Benefit Valor Medals Review

, 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 annual fundraising event that benefits selected University programs, will be held on Wednesday, June 10, at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Mo., starting at 6 p.m. This year鈥檚 Night at the Helm will benefit Park鈥檚 Valor Medals Review project being conducted by the University鈥檚 in conjunction with the Valor Medals Review Task Force and the Foundation for the Commemoration of the World Wars on behalf of the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission.

This year鈥檚 Night at the Helm chair is James Cornelius, president of institutional banking at UMB Bank and a member of Park鈥檚 Board of Trustees; the honorary chair is Rosana Privitera Biondo, president of MarkOne Electric. The event includes a cocktail and hors d鈥檕euvres hour, followed by a program. Individual tickets are $250 and a variety of sponsorship levels are available starting at $1,000. Women鈥檚 History Month Lecture to Discuss 鈥淧rescribing the Pill鈥

海角乱伦社区鈥檚 annual Women鈥檚 History Month Lecture will feature a discussion on 鈥淧rescribing the Pill鈥 on Monday, March 30. The lecture, to be presented by Beth Bailey, Ph.D., will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater inside Alumni Hall on the University鈥檚 Parkville Campus. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

Bailey, the director of the Center for Military, War and Society Studies, and a Foundation Distinguished Professor within the Department of History at the University of Kansas, will discuss how this method of birth control offered women freedom and the struggle over access to the pill. She will also define what the pill meant in the university town of Lawrence, Kan., as the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s complicated feminist claims. An Insider Look at the EPA is Focus of 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 Johnson Lecture

Established nearly 50 years ago (December 2, 1970) to consolidate in one agency a variety of federal research, monitoring, standard-setting and enforcement activities to ensure environmental protection, the Environmental Protection Agency works to provide a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people. On Tuesday, March 31, 海角乱伦社区 will host Jeffery Robichaud, director of the EPA鈥檚 Region 7 Water Division, for an insider鈥檚 view of the history of environmental protection and the imperative for science to drive the next 50 years as part of the University鈥檚 fifth annual Johnson Family Lecture Series in Science. The talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater inside Alumni Hall on the University鈥檚 Parkville Campus. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public.

Robichaud will reflect upon 50 years of environmental protection and advances since the creation of the EPA, his journey as a second generation scientist focused on protecting public health and the environment, and the importance of science in solving the nation鈥檚 complicated environmental challenges. The Johnson Family Lecture Series in Science was established in 2016 to provide members of the community, as well as liberal arts and science majors, an opportunity to experience science in action and hear established scientists discuss their research. The lecture series was established by 海角乱伦社区 alumnus George Johnson, 鈥63, Ph.D., who provided funding for the event. Campanella Gallery Hosting Exhibit of Faculty Art

An art exhibit featuring the work of 海角乱伦社区 faculty is on display through Friday, April 24, in the University鈥檚 Campanella Gallery, located within Norrington Center on the Parkville Campus. Admission to the exhibit, 鈥淰ision 20/20: Art by 海角乱伦社区 Faculty, is free. A reception for the artists will be held on Friday, March 20, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Gallery. The exhibit will celebrate the creative accomplishments and diverse talents of the University鈥檚 Department of Art and Design faculty in a variety of media and stylistic expressions, including photography, mixed media, digital art, fiber, drawing, ceramic, and painting.

Registration Open for Student Research and Creative Arts Symposium

海角乱伦社区鈥檚 annual Student Research and Creative Arts Symposium showcases the scholarly and creative work of students from all disciplines and campuses. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit course work or independent research or creative projects developed with a faculty member鈥檚 supervision, either single or collaboratively-authored that take the form of: posters presenting laboratory or other applied research findings; research papers and oral presentations (oral presentations limited to 10 minutes); visual art and graphic design installations; musical presentations; and virtual presentations (slide or video presentations uploaded to Symposium website).

Bridget Locke, director of strategic communications, was honored by Friends of Yates on Feb. 23 as a recipient of a Women of Distinction Award during a ceremony in Kansas City, Kan. The organization, whose mission is to strive to continuously provide services and a sense of identity to children, youth, adults and senior citizens that facilitates safe and productive lives, said that Locke was honored for her achievements in her professional and personal life. Locke is shown with Robert Milan Sr., Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities vice president, and Tyrone Garner, retired Kansas City, Kan., Police Department deputy chief.

Dilshod Narzillaev, senior major, was selected as a co-fourth place recipient at the International Cello Competition Antonio Janigro in Zagreb, Croatia, held Feb. 1-7. Narvillaev received a 1,000 EUR prize (approximately $1,100).

Jeanette PrengerJeanette Prenger, 鈥09, chair of 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 Board of Trustees, authored a chapter for a recently published book, The Anatomy of Accomplishment: Your Guide to Bigger, Better, Bolder Business Results. The book includes a compilation of stories and advice written by a variety of leading female entrepreneurs and executives from around the country. Prenger鈥檚 chapter, 鈥淧laying the Long Game,鈥 is a look at her journey with her company, ECCO Select, where she serves as president and chief executive officer.

A team of 海角乱伦社区 students came home with a trio of trophies from the Missouri Association of Forensics Activities tournament, held Feb. 14-15 in Neosho, Mo. The Park team won the sweepstakes trophy in the small school division and second place sweepstakes trophies in debate and individual events divisions. Team members Michael Willis and Hailey Raw are shown with the trophies. In addition, Lora Cohn, Ph.D., associate professor of communication arts, was elected president elect of the MAFA.

Zac Jarrard, information technology services project manager, presented a pair of sessions at the Minefaire Dallas event, Feb. 22-23. He presented 鈥淏uilding a Dream Home鈥 and 鈥淰ideo Gamers are Leaders, Too.鈥

Four students represented 海角乱伦社区 at the Missouri Governor鈥檚 Student Leadership Forum on Faith and Values, Feb. 14-16 in Jefferson City. Park students who participated were: Kayla Martinez, senior middle school education/math major; Katherine Payne, senior graphic design major; Sophie Roper, junior business administration/logistics and computer information management major; and Ava Hageman, freshman secondary education/social science major. The annual event challenges students鈥 character development by encouraging them to reflect on their own decision-making skills, values and belief systems. Students learn about how to reconcile relationships, stand for truth and love others as they love themselves. The forum鈥檚 guiding principle is teaching students to embrace altruism rather than egotism.

Jack MacLennan, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, presented a paper on 鈥淭he Empire of Objects: Fractals and the Engineering of Airpower as a Security Assemblage鈥 as part of a dialogue on war and society on the Parkville Campus on March 3.

海角乱伦社区 is a spotlight sponsor of the Italian Film Festival USA 鈥 Kansas City series of movie screenings. Movies will be shown on Thursdays on April 2, April 9 and April 23, and a short film program will be on Thursday, April 16, all starting at 7 p.m. at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Mo. The film on April 2, 鈥淢a Cosa Ci Dice Il Cervello鈥 (鈥淒on鈥檛 Stop Me Now鈥) will be presented by Silvia Giovanardi Byer, Ph.D., chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages and professor of modern languages. A trio of students in the 海角乱伦社区 were awarded prizes at the Kansas City Musical Club scholarship auditions on Feb. 29 in Prairie Village, Kan. Violinist David Horak, junior strings/music performance major, and pianist Ilya Shmukler, graduate student in piano performance, both received $1,000 scholarships, and violinist Ilkhom Mukhiddinov, freshman strings/music performance major, received a $750 scholarship.
